Role of foundation species in ecological processes
From Wednesday, 16. February 2011
To Friday, 18. February 2011

Workshop within WP2

Foundation species have a disproportionately large role in the regulation of biodiversity and the provisioning of services in many ecosystems. Loss of foundation species by selective harvesting, land use or climate change, invasions of alien species, or maladaptation of foundation species as climates change has important consequences for the functioning of ecosystems, conservation of biodiversity and the provisioning of services provided by these ecosystems. The genetic diversity of foundation species is known to affect biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, management and restoration of foundation species currently is hampered by inadequate knowledge on the degree of genetic diversity within foundation species that is needed to maintain and enhance their role in ecosystems.
